Follow before link: how follow gates work
"Follow me and comment GUIDE" is the oldest growth trick on Instagram. Automation made it scale: the DM asks for the follow, then sends the link. But there is a gap between asking and checking, and that gap is where most gates leak.
This guide explains how gates work, what the data says, and how to set one up that people complete.
Two kinds of gate
| Type | How it works | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Honour system | Sends a button: tap "I'm following" to get the link | Anyone can tap without following |
| Verified | Asks Instagram whether the person follows you | A few extra seconds per check |
What the data shows
Tadlo has published production data from its follow gate: across 12,344 follow checks over 23 days, 41% of commenters asking for a link did not follow the account, and 33.3% of people who tapped "I'm following" were not actually following. Put simply: on an honour-system gate, roughly one in three people who claim to follow get the link without following.
Soft ask or hard gate
- Soft ask: ask them to follow, send the link either way. Kinder, fewer complaints, smaller follower gain.
- Hard gate: link only after the follow is confirmed. More followers, a few drop off.
- Use hard gates for freebies people really want: templates, notes, recipes. Use soft asks for product links.
Write a gate DM people finish
- Thank them and name the thing they asked for.
- Give the reason: "I post one of these every week, follow so you don't miss the next."
- One button to check again after following.
- Send the link immediately once they follow.
What happens when Instagram does not answer
Occasionally the follow check cannot get a reply from Instagram. A well-built gate fails open: it sends the link anyway rather than leaving the person stuck. That is why no gate can promise that every recipient follows you, and it is the right trade-off for your audience's experience.
Gates and DM limits
A gate sends at least two messages per person. On tools with a monthly DM cap, that halves how many people you can serve. On tools with unlimited DMs, it makes no difference.
Common gate mistakes
- Gating a product link, where the sale matters more than the follow.
- No re-check button, so people who followed are stuck.
- A long explanation before the ask.
- Gating every reel, which tires your audience.
Measuring your gate
Track three numbers per reel: people asked, people who followed, and people who claimed to follow but did not. If many people drop off, your freebie is not strong enough for a hard gate; switch to a soft ask.

Our top pick
Best for: A follow gate that checks
The follow gate checks through Instagram's API whether the commenter follows you. You choose a soft ask or a hard gate, and each check is recorded as asked, followed, or claimed but not following. If Instagram returns no answer, the gate fails open and sends the link. It is free on every plan, with unlimited DMs, so the extra gate messages never count against a cap.
Price: Free forever plan with no card needed. Paid plans start at ₹249 a month in India or $5 a month elsewhere. Every plan, including Free, has unlimited automations and unlimited DMs (no monthly DM quota and no per-contact charge; sends are paced within Instagram's limits).
Strengths
- Unlimited DMs and automations on every plan, including Free, so a viral reel never raises your bill
- Verified follow gate: checks through Instagram's API whether the commenter really follows you before sending the link
- Comment-to-DM on any comment or chosen keywords, story reply automation and DM keyword flows in a visual flow builder
- Email capture, comment-to-product carousels and a link-in-bio page in the same tool
- Connects with Instagram Business Login on the official API, so no Facebook Page is needed
- AI reel analysis and analytics on paid plans
Limitations
- Facebook comment-to-DM and Messenger keyword replies are still being added
- Newer than ManyChat, so the template library and tutorial community are smaller
- The Free plan covers one Instagram account
- The Free plan adds a "via Tadlo" line to DMs and limits lead export to 100 leads
Frequently asked questions
How does follow to get link work on Instagram?
A comment-to-DM tool asks the commenter to follow, then sends the link once they do. Verified gates check the follow through Instagram's API.
Do people fake follow to get a link?
Yes. In Tadlo's published data, 33.3% of people who tapped "I'm following" were not actually following.
Is a follow gate allowed on Instagram?
Tools on Meta's official API can ask people to follow before sending a link. Keep it friendly and deliver what you promised.
What happens if someone follows and then unfollows?
They keep the link they already received. Gates check at the moment of the request, not afterwards.
Should I use a follow gate on every reel?
No. Use it for strong freebies; use a soft ask or no gate for product links.
Which tool has a verified follow gate?
Tadlo AI checks through Instagram's API on every plan, including Free.
