How to measure comment-to-DM results
Most creators judge comment-to-DM by how many comments a reel got. Comments are the cheapest number in the funnel. What matters is what people did after the DM arrived: clicked, followed, subscribed or bought.
This guide sets out a simple measurement routine you can run in ten minutes a week, and how to use it to make better reels.
The funnel, step by step
| Step | Number | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | Comments with the keyword | How strong the CTA was |
| Delivery | DMs sent | Whether the automation caught everyone |
| Attention | DMs opened | Whether people found and read the DM |
| Action | Link clicks | Whether the offer was worth tapping |
| Result | Follows, emails or sales | Whether it grew your business |
Where each number comes from
Comments and views come from Instagram's insights. DMs sent, opens and clicks come from your automation tool. Follows from a gate come from the tool's follow check records. Emails come from your leads inbox, and sales from your shop or affiliate dashboard. Put them in one sheet, one row per reel, and the patterns appear quickly.
Compare fairly
A reel with a million views will beat a reel with ten thousand on every raw number. Divide by views to compare: clicks per thousand views and follows per thousand views tell you which reels and CTAs actually work, regardless of reach.
What good and bad numbers usually mean
- Many comments, few DMs: keyword variants are missing.
- Many DMs, few opens: messages are sitting in Requests; mention it in your public reply.
- Many opens, few clicks: the DM's first line or button is weak, or the offer is not what people expected.
- Many clicks, few emails: the ask comes too late or asks for too much.
Measuring follow gates
For gated reels, track people asked, people who followed, and people who claimed to follow but had not. Tadlo has published production data from its follow gate: across 12,344 follow checks over 23 days, 41% of commenters asking for a link did not follow the account, and 33.3% of people who tapped "I'm following" were not actually following. Your own numbers will tell you whether your freebies are strong enough for a hard gate.
A weekly ten-minute routine
- Export or note last week's five numbers for each reel.
- Calculate clicks and follows per thousand views.
- Find the best and worst reel.
- Write one sentence on why you think each performed that way.
- Plan next week's reels to repeat the best one's CTA or freebie.
Test one thing at a time
When you change something, change one thing: the keyword, the freebie, the DM wording or the gate. Change three at once and you will not know which helped. A/B testing in your DM tool makes DM wording tests easy.
Numbers that do not matter much
- Total comments without the keyword.
- Likes on the automated public replies.
- Follower count changes on days you did not post a gated reel.

Frequently asked questions
What should I measure for comment-to-DM?
Comments with the keyword, DMs sent, opens, link clicks, and the result you want: follows, emails or sales.
How do I know which reel drove sales?
Add tracking parameters to the links in your DMs, then check sales by source in your shop or affiliate dashboard.
Why are my DM open rates low?
Often because messages sit in the Requests folder of people who don't follow you. Tell commenters to check their requests.
Is comment-to-DM analytics free?
On Tadlo AI, the analytics dashboard is free on every plan.
