How to send a product carousel in an Instagram DM
Routine, haul and "what I use" reels feature several products. Sending each link as a separate message is messy and slow. A carousel puts them side by side, and the viewer swipes to the one they want.
This guide covers when to use one, how to build it and how to see which products get clicked.
When a carousel beats a single link
| Reel type | Use |
|---|---|
| One product review | Single link |
| Skincare or makeup routine | Carousel |
| Outfit or haul | Carousel |
| Desk or gear setup | Carousel |
| Recipe with ingredients to buy | Carousel of key ingredients |
How many cards
Tadlo AI supports 2 to 10 cards per DM. Fewer is often better: five well-chosen products get more clicks than ten where the important ones are buried. Put the product you mention first in the reel as the first card.
Build each card
- A clear product photo, ideally the same one shown in the reel.
- A short title people recognise: "The serum from step 2".
- A button with a clear action: "View" or "Buy".
- An affiliate or product link with tracking parameters.
Write the message around it
Add one line before the carousel so it does not arrive without context: "Here's everything from my morning routine, swipe for each one." If links are affiliate links, say so in that line.
Track clicks per product
Tag each card's link differently, so your affiliate dashboard or shop shows which products people chose. Over a few reels you will learn which products your audience trusts you on.
Keep carousels current
- Swap out-of-stock products quickly.
- Update prices if your cards show them.
- Check links still work after a brand changes its site.
Carousels for small shops
If you sell your own products, a collection reel with a carousel DM works like a mini-catalogue. Each card links to the product page, and buyers can ask questions by replying to the DM.
Disclosure
ASCI's influencer guidelines ask creators in India to label paid, gifted and affiliate content with a clear tag such as "Ad", "Collaboration", "Affiliate" or "Free gift", not buried among hashtags.
Carousel or a link page?
Some creators send one link to a page listing all the products instead of a carousel. A carousel keeps everything inside Instagram and shows images straight away; a link page can hold more items and update without touching the automation. For reels with up to ten items, a carousel is usually the smoother experience.
Order the cards well
- Put the item you talk about most first.
- Group by step or by body area for routines.
- Put a budget alternative last, if you include one.
Carousels for your own products
If you sell your own merchandise or prints, a carousel by keyword works as a quick shop window. Each card links to the product page, and buyers can reply to the DM with sizing or delivery questions you answer personally.
Testing carousel against single link
Not sure whether your audience prefers a carousel or one link? Use A/B testing: send half the commenters a carousel and half a single link to a list, and compare clicks after a few hundred sends each.
Common mistakes
- Ten cards when three would do.
- Generic titles like "Product 1".
- Different products in the carousel than in the reel.
- No line of context before the cards.
