The Instagram 24-hour messaging window, explained
The 24-hour rule is the most misunderstood part of Instagram automation. It explains why you cannot send a launch reminder to everyone who commented last week, and why story replies are so valuable.
This guide sets out the windows, from Meta's own documentation, and how to plan around them.
The rules
| Trigger | What you can send |
|---|---|
| They message you or reply to a story | Messages for 24 hours after their last message |
| They click a Click-to-Direct ad | The window may last up to 7 days |
| They comment on a post or reel | One private reply, within 7 days of the comment |
| They reply to your private reply | A new 24-hour window opens |
| A person on your team replies | A separate 7-day human agent window |
In Meta's words
Instagram lets a business message someone freely for 24 hours after their last message (up to 7 days after a click-to-Direct ad), and a person on your team can reply within a separate 7-day human agent window. A private reply to a comment is one message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment; you can continue only if the person replies within 24 hours.
Why the rule exists
The windows stop accounts from messaging people who have not engaged recently. They protect users from spam, and they protect creators' reputations too, because unwanted messages are what get accounts reported.
What this means for your DMs
- Put the important thing in the first message; you may not get another.
- End with a question to invite a reply, which opens a 24-hour window.
- Use story replies for conversations that need follow-up questions.
- Collect an email or WhatsApp opt-in for anything you want to send days later.
Planning a launch
If you build a waitlist on Instagram, you cannot DM everyone on launch day unless they have messaged you in the previous 24 hours. Ask for an email or WhatsApp opt-in in the waitlist DM, and use those on launch day. Then post the launch reel with a keyword for new people.
Story replies: the longest automated window
A story reply is a message from them, so it opens the full 24-hour window. That is why story automations can ask a follow-up question, wait for the answer and respond, which comment automations often cannot.
The human agent window
If someone on your team needs longer to answer, for example to check stock or details, a human reply can use the separate 7-day human agent window. It is for people answering people, not for automated campaigns.
What good tools do for you
- Stop automated follow-ups when the window closes.
- Send only one private reply per comment.
- Keep replies within 7 days of the comment.
- Queue and pace within Instagram's rate limits.

- Promising "I'll message you next week" in a DM.
- Using a tool that ignores the window and risks your account.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Instagram 24-hour rule?
After someone messages you, you can message them freely for 24 hours. After that, you wait for them to message again.
Can I DM someone who commented a week ago?
Only within 7 days of the comment, and only one private reply.
Does a story reply open the 24-hour window?
Yes. A story reply is a message from them, so the 24-hour window opens.
How do I reach people after the window closes?
Ask for an email or WhatsApp opt-in inside the window, and use that later.
