Instagram DM limits explained
"How many DMs can I send a day?" has two answers: what Instagram allows, and what your tool's plan allows. Creators often confuse the two, and blame Instagram for a cap that is really their tool's.
This guide separates them, using Meta's own documentation.
Instagram's rules for automated DMs
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| One private reply per comment | Each comment can trigger one DM |
| Within 7 days of the comment | Old comments cannot be replied to privately |
| Follow-ups need a reply | Further messages only if they reply, within 24 hours |
| Rate limits | 750 private replies an hour for comments on posts and reels |
The 24-hour window
Instagram lets a business message someone freely for 24 hours after their last message (up to 7 days after a click-to-Direct ad), and a person on your team can reply within a separate 7-day human agent window. Automated follow-ups only work inside that window.
Rate limits in practice
Meta's API allows 750 private replies an hour for comments on Instagram posts and reels. On a reel that gets thousands of comments in an hour, a good tool queues the rest and sends them as capacity frees up. The last commenters wait a little longer; nobody is skipped.
Tool caps are different
| Tool | Free plan cap |
|---|---|
| Tadlo AI | None (unlimited DMs) |
| ReplyRush | 1,500 DMs a month |
| ReplyKaro | 1,000 DMs a month |
| LinkDM | 1,000 DMs a month |
| InstantDM | 500 DM automations a month |
These caps are set by each tool's pricing, not by Instagram.
Why limits exist
Instagram limits automation to protect people from spam. Tools that respect the limits and pace sends keep your account in good standing; tools that try to push past them risk errors or restrictions.
How to stay within limits
- Use a tool on Meta's official API that queues and paces.
- Only message people who commented or messaged you.
- Keep the first DM useful, since follow-ups depend on a reply.
- Avoid identical public replies at high volume.
What about the old "50 DMs a day" numbers?
You may see figures for manual DM limits on blogs. Those are about sending DMs by hand to people who did not contact you, which is a different situation, and Instagram does not publish a single fixed number for it. Automated replies to commenters follow the API rules above.
Plan caps vs Instagram limits
When a DM stops sending, check your tool's dashboard first. A message such as "monthly limit reached" is your plan, not Instagram. Upgrading the plan or switching to a tool without a monthly cap fixes that; nothing you change in Instagram will.
When a DM does not arrive
- The comment is older than 7 days.
- The person already got a private reply for that comment.
- The message is in their Requests folder.
- Your tool's monthly cap ran out.

Frequently asked questions
How many automated DMs can Instagram send per hour?
Meta's API allows 750 private replies an hour for comments on Instagram posts and reels.
Is there a daily DM limit for Instagram automation?
Instagram's limits for automation are per comment and per hour rather than a fixed daily number. Your tool may add its own monthly cap.
Can I DM someone who commented two weeks ago?
Not with a private reply. Private replies must be sent within 7 days of the comment.
Do Instagram's limits apply to every tool equally?
Yes. Every official-API tool works within the same Meta rules; tools differ in how they queue and in their own plan caps.
Do paid plans send DMs faster?
On some tools, yes. Tadlo AI gives paid plans priority delivery, and Pro the fastest queue, within Instagram's limits.
Why does my tool stop sending DMs?
Usually a monthly cap on your plan. Tadlo AI has no monthly cap on any plan.
