How to switch to an Instagram professional account for automation
Personal Instagram accounts cannot be connected to automation tools. Meta's APIs only work with professional accounts, which also unlock insights and contact options.
This guide covers which type to choose, how to switch, and what to check before you connect a DM tool.
Creator or business?
| Creator | Business | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Individual creators and influencers | Brands, shops and service businesses |
| Contact options | Available | Available |
| Works with automation tools | Yes | Yes |
Both work with comment-to-DM tools. Choose the one that matches how you present yourself.
How to switch
- Open your profile and go to settings.
- Find the account type option and choose to switch to a professional account.
- Pick creator or business and a category that describes you.
- Review the contact options and choose what to show.
- Finish; your profile now shows insights.
What changes after switching
- You get insights on reach and engagement.
- You can show a category and contact options on your profile.
- You can connect official automation tools.
- If your account was private, professional accounts are public.
Before connecting a DM tool
- Turn on message access for connected tools in your message settings.
- Decide which posts you will automate first.
- Have a second account ready for testing.
- Prepare your first freebie or link.
Can I switch back?
Yes. You can switch back to a personal account in settings. Your automation tools will stop working, because they need a professional account.
Common worries
- Reach: switching account type is not known to reduce reach on its own.
- Privacy: professional accounts are public, so review what you share.
- Cost: switching is free.
Next step: connect without a Facebook Page
With a professional account, tools that use Instagram Login connect directly, with no Facebook Page. Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login does not require a Facebook Page linked to the professional account.
Choosing your category
When you switch, Instagram asks you to pick a category, such as creator, blogger, artist or a business type. It shows on your profile and helps people understand what you do. Pick the closest match; you can change it later in settings, and it does not affect whether automation tools work.
Business accounts and shopping
If you sell physical products, a business account can connect to Instagram's shopping features where available, and it presents you as a brand. If you are a person sharing your life, skills or recommendations, a creator account usually fits better. Either way, comment-to-DM and story automation work the same.
If the switch option is missing
- Update the Instagram app to the latest version.
- Check whether the account is managed by a parent or school account, which can limit settings.
- Try from a phone rather than a browser.
Check it worked
After connecting your tool, comment your keyword from a second account. If the DM arrives, everything is set up correctly.
